Day 18: Adventures in Georgetown

Our Caffé Vita-employed aunt referred us to All City Coffee in Georgetown.

I should have done my All City homework before we visited the café, because according to a November 2010 Seattle Weekly post, All City makes the fifth best latte in all of the city. But if the foam atop my Yankee Dog was any indication of their latte-making skillz, I find that easy to believe.

Georgetown

Georgetown’s been called the “wild west of Seattle” and claims to be “Seattle’s oldest residential neighborhood.” It’s an eclectic mix of art, industry, and entrepreneurship. Unassumingly tucked between Boeing Field and the heart of the city, Georgetown’s old brick buildings and graffiti-coated walls are a testament to the raw, real side of Seattle.

All City, all the time

In her review of All City Coffee, Seattle Weekly’s Rose Tosti proclaimed the “distinctly library-esque” All City a “haven for readers.” I couldn’t agree more. The comfortable corner café is lined with picture windows that let in natural light, views of Trib, and front-row seats to the impossibly-close jets landing at Boeing Field. It’s the kind of place you want to linger in.

The café features a good mix of seating options: a large communal table (with powerstrip for the laptop users among us), a healthy selection of two-person tables, and a couch/coffee table combo, complete with built-in chessboard and mushroom-like coiled stools that bring to mind images of Alice in Wonderland. The south wall is sprinkled with a hodge-podge installation of local art, arranged effortlessly and numbered in pencil.

As demonstrated by the signature Vita skateboard wall-art, All City serves up Caffé Vita-roasted beans. The espresso is strong, the foam is velvety, and the pastry selection (your usual mix of scones, sweet and savory croissants, and cookies) looked delicious.

The verdict

I’m amazed I hadn’t heard of All City before now, even if it is hidden from the Airport Way thoroughfare. The space is wonderful, and it feels good to support a really great local café—which are often hard to come by south of the city. This remote employee will definitely be making it back to Georgetown very soon.
